LUCHA Celebrates New Affordable Housing Championed by Single Mothers
In the changing Humboldt Park and West Town communities, a group of single mothers organized in 1998 to call attention to the lack of affordable housing for long-time, low-income residents. Together with Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA), they embarked on a project to provide 36 new units of housing in Humboldt Park.
The groundbreaking was cause for a celebration, and Valerie Denney Communications helped LUCHA organize just that. VDC worked closely with LUCHA to develop event materials and a program that captured the heart and spirit of the Latino community in Humboldt Park.
On October 31, 2005, Congressman Luis Gutierrez, local aldermen, community leaders and residents gathered in Simons Park, in the center of the Humboldt Park neighborhood, to ceremoniously “break ground” on the new endeavor. The event also drew Spanish-language and Chicago-area media, including Hoy, Extra, La Raza, Univision, and ABC 7 News.
